Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and CEO of Tesla, recently disclosed a new initiative by the Trump administration to boost productivity among federal employees. In a Saturday post on X, Musk announced that all federal workers will need to send a weekly productivity report through email.
The email offers federal employees a chance to reflect on their achievements from the past week. However, Musk warned that ignoring the email would be considered a resignation by the federal government.
“Following President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal workers will soon receive an email requesting a brief summary of their activities last week. Not responding will be seen as a resignation,” Musk explained.
A spokesperson from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed Musk’s intentions in a statement to Fox News Digital.
“As part of the Trump Administration’s dedication to an efficient and accountable federal workforce, OPM is asking employees to provide a concise overview of their tasks completed last week by the end of Monday, CCing their manager. Agencies will then decide on the next steps,” the official stated.
Later on Saturday, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung showed support for the initiative, sharing a screenshot of the email on X.
“This is an excellent idea, and even White House staffers should list all the great things they’ve accomplished this week, just like everyone in the Administration should do,” Cheung wrote.
However, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) labor union strongly opposed Musk’s plans in a post on X, stating that it would “challenge any unlawful terminations of our members and federal employees across the country.”
The AFGE criticized Musk for forcing federal employees to justify their job duties to an “out-of-touch, privileged, unelected billionaire who has never performed a single honest hour of public service in his life.”
These productivity reports coincided with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continuing to cut suspected waste across the federal government. On Tuesday, DOGE shared a post on X revealing that it had found 4 million active credit cards on the U.S. government’s books.
DOGE explained that the U.S. government currently holds about 4.6 million active credit cards/accounts that processed around 90 million unique transactions for approximately $40 billion in spending during FY24.
President Donald Trump has shown his support for Musk’s work with DOGE. On Saturday, Trump wrote on Truth Social that while Musk is “doing a great job,” he should be “more aggressive.”
Trump stressed the importance of saving the country and ultimately making it greater than ever before, stating, “ELON IS DOING A GREAT JOB, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIM GET MORE AGGRESSIVE. REMEMBER, WE HAVE A COUNTRY TO SAVE, BUT ULTIMATELY, TO MAKE GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. MAGA!”
Musk responded enthusiastically wi
th a “Will do, Mr. President!” just hours after Trump’s post.
